How does automatic internal linking work?

When a post is optimised, the SEO Engine adds internal links to your related older posts, or an "Also read" list. Internal links help readers find more of your coverage and help search engines discover and understand your pages.

The options are in SEO Settings → Internal Linking:

  • Maximum internal links per post – 3 by default.
  • An "Also read" list.
  • Link to any post, or only to posts in the same category.

A campaign can turn internal links off, or allow 1 to 10, in its own SEO box. The Links column of the SEO Dashboard shows how many links each post got.

On a new site many posts show No internal links. That is normal: there are no older related posts to link to yet, and links appear as your archive grows. For your most important stories, adding a few links by hand to useful background articles still helps readers.
