How to Start an Automated News Website on WordPress

A step-by-step guide to launching a WordPress news site that publishes fresh, AI-rewritten stories automatically — niche, feeds, setup and SEO.

An automated news website is a WordPress site that collects news from trusted sources, turns each item into a post, and publishes it on a schedule without you copying and pasting every story. Done well, automation saves hours of manual work every day. Done badly, it creates a site full of thin, copied posts that nobody reads and that search engines ignore. This guide walks you through the full setup, step by step, so you build the first kind of site and not the second.

What an automated news website really is

Automation does not mean "no human work". It means the machine handles the repetitive tasks, and you handle the decisions.

A typical automated news site has four parts:

  1. Sources. RSS or Atom feeds from news sites, blogs, press release pages or government portals.
  2. Import. A tool reads those feeds on a schedule and creates WordPress posts.
  3. Processing. Filters remove weak items, the full article is extracted, and the text is rewritten, summarised or translated.
  4. Review and publishing. Some posts go live automatically. Others wait as drafts until you check them.

The goal is to publish useful, timely posts in your niche with less manual effort. If a step makes your posts less useful to readers, it is the wrong step.

Step 1: Choose a clear niche

A general "all news" site competes with the largest media houses in the world. A small, focused site has a much better chance.

Good niche ideas are narrow enough to be useful and wide enough to have daily news. For example: technology news in one language, job notifications for one state, news about one industry such as solar energy, or local city news in a regional language.

Ask yourself three questions before you decide:

  1. Are there at least 5 to 10 reliable sources that publish RSS feeds on this topic?
  2. Can I add something of my own, such as local context, a summary, a translation or a comparison?
  3. Would a real person bookmark this site?

If the answer to all three is yes, you have a workable niche.

Step 2: Set up WordPress properly

You do not need anything special, but a few basics matter a lot for an automated site.

Hosting

Pick hosting that can handle regular background jobs. Automated sites import posts many times a day, download images and run scheduled tasks. Very cheap shared hosting can struggle with this. A good managed WordPress host or a small VPS is usually enough for a new site.

Theme

Choose a fast, clean news or magazine theme. Make sure it shows featured images well, loads quickly on mobile, and displays the post date clearly. Readers of news sites care about freshness.

Basic settings

  1. Set your timezone correctly under Settings > General. Scheduled imports depend on it.
  2. Use readable permalinks, such as /%postname%/, under Settings > Permalinks.
  3. Create your main categories before you import anything. For example: National, Business, Technology, Sports.
  4. Create a real "About" page and a "Contact" page. Say who runs the site and how readers can reach you.
  5. Add a clear policy page that explains how you source news and how people can ask for corrections or removals.

Real cron (recommended)

WordPress runs scheduled tasks through WP-Cron, which only fires when someone visits your site. On a new site with little traffic, this means imports can run late. If your host allows it, set up a real server cron job that calls wp-cron.php every few minutes. Your host's control panel usually has a "Cron Jobs" section for this.

Step 3: Find good sources

Your site can only be as good as its sources. Spend real time on this step.

Look for:

  • Official sources: government press releases, ministry websites, regulators, company newsrooms. These are often meant to be shared.
  • Niche blogs and industry sites that publish original reporting.
  • Feeds that allow reuse. Some publishers state clearly that their content can be republished with credit. Others do not allow it at all.

Most WordPress sites have a feed at /feed/. Many news sites list their RSS feeds on a dedicated page. For a detailed method, read our guide on how to find RSS feeds for a news website.

Check the terms of each source

This part is important. Republishing someone else's article, even after rewriting it, can infringe their copyright. Before you add any source:

  1. Read the site's terms of use or content licence.
  2. Prefer sources that clearly allow reuse, such as official press releases or openly licensed content.
  3. Always credit and link to the original article.
  4. Add your own value, such as commentary, local context or a summary, instead of just reposting.
  5. Respond quickly and politely to any takedown request.

This is not legal advice. If you are unsure about a source, check with a lawyer before you use it.

Step 4: Install an auto-posting plugin

You need a plugin that reads feeds and creates posts. There are several options. This guide uses AI AutoPost as the example, because it covers import, filtering, full-article extraction, AI rewriting and translation in one place. You can see the full list on the features page.

The basic setup is:

  1. Download the plugin from the download page.
  2. Upload it under Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin and activate it.
  3. Enter your license key. Each license is bound to one site domain.
  4. New accounts get free starter posts, so you can test before you buy any credit pack.

The how it works page shows the full flow in more detail.

Step 5: Create your first campaign

In AI AutoPost, a campaign is one import job. Each campaign has:

  • One or more RSS or Atom feed URLs
  • The WordPress category where posts will go
  • A maximum number of posts to create per run
  • A schedule

A good way to organise campaigns is one campaign per category. For example, a "Technology" campaign with three tech feeds, and a "Business" campaign with four business feeds.

Start small. For example, set the maximum to 2 or 3 posts per run while you test. You can increase it later once you trust the output.

If you want a similar setup for another category, you can clone a campaign and change only the feeds and category. You can also export campaigns and import them on another site.

For a detailed, hands-on walkthrough of the feed side, read RSS to WordPress: how to auto-post from RSS feeds.

Step 6: Set filters to keep quality high

Filters are your first line of defence against weak posts. Not every item in a feed deserves to be on your site.

Filter What it does Why it helps
Minimum word count Skips very short items Removes one-line updates and teasers
Maximum word count Skips very long items Avoids huge posts that are hard to rewrite well
Blocked keywords Skips items whose title or content contains words you choose Keeps off-topic or unwanted stories out
Duplicate title check Skips items whose title matches an existing post Stops the same story appearing twice
Require image Skips items that have no image in the feed Keeps your homepage and social shares looking complete

Add blocked keywords for topics you never want, such as "horoscope" or "sponsored", depending on your niche. After the first week, look at what got through and what got skipped, and adjust.

Step 7: Extract the full article

Many feeds only include a short summary, not the full text. If you publish only that summary, the post is thin and offers readers very little.

AI AutoPost can visit the original article page and extract the full text. It first tries to read the page's structured data (the NewsArticle or BlogPosting markup many news sites use), or it detects the main content area automatically. If a site has an unusual layout, you can give it a custom CSS selector, an XPath expression or a regex so it picks the right part of the page.

Test extraction on each new source and check that menus and ads did not slip in.

Step 8: Rewrite, summarise or translate with AI

This is where you can turn a source article into something that serves your readers better. It is also where many automated sites go wrong, so be careful.

Use AI to add value, not to hide copying

Google has said that using AI or automation to create content is not against its guidelines by itself. What matters is whether the content is helpful, reliable and made for people. Using automation mainly to manipulate search rankings is spam. Its spam policies also describe "scaled content abuse": producing many pages mainly to rank, with little value, whether by AI, humans or both.

So do not simply "spin" articles. Instead, write prompts that ask the AI to:

  • Summarise the key facts in simple language for your audience
  • Explain what the news means for a specific group of readers
  • Add a short background section
  • Keep all facts, names, numbers and dates exactly as in the source

How prompts work in AI AutoPost

You write prompt templates using [gpt]...[/gpt] tags. The title and content are rewritten together in one AI call, and each rewritten post costs one post credit. The AI runs on AlgoPoint AI's servers using OpenAI, Google Gemini or Anthropic Claude, so you do not need your own API keys.

If the AI call fails, the item is skipped or saved as pending. The raw prompt is never published on your site.

Translation for regional audiences

If your readers prefer another language, you can translate posts into languages such as Hindi, Gujarati, Malayalam, Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian, Vietnamese and more. For non-English titles, the plugin creates English, transliterated URL slugs, so your links stay clean and readable. Our guide to multilingual news sites with auto-translation covers this in more depth.

Step 9: Handle images correctly

AI AutoPost downloads the image from the feed item into your WordPress media library, sets it as the featured image, and adds alt text. Keep in mind that images are also someone's work. Check each source's terms for image reuse, and replace images with your own or licensed ones where needed.

Step 10: Decide what publishes automatically

Not everything should go live without review, especially at the start.

A sensible approach:

  1. First week: save everything as drafts and review each post by hand.
  2. After that: let trusted sources and campaigns publish directly.
  3. Always: keep new or risky sources on draft mode.

AI AutoPost also has content validation. If a post's title or content is below the minimum word count, it is saved as a draft for you to review instead of being published.

Set aside a fixed time each day, for example 20 to 30 minutes, to review drafts, fix mistakes and add your own notes to the best stories.

Step 11: Schedule and monitor

Once your campaigns work, set a schedule that fits your niche. Fast-moving topics may need imports every hour. Slower topics may need only a few runs a day.

Do not chase volume. A site that publishes, for example, 10 useful posts a day is better than one that publishes 200 near-copies. Large volumes of low-value pages are exactly what Google's scaled content abuse policy targets.

Each week, check which campaigns produce weak posts, whether any source changed its layout and broke extraction, whether duplicates are slipping through, and whether you have enough post credits left. Our article on how to avoid duplicate content on an auto-posting news site explains how to keep your archive clean.

Step 12: Build trust and SEO basics

Readers and search engines look for signs that a site is real: an author or editor on each post, a link to the original source, clear About and Contact pages, a sitemap submitted in Google Search Console, and a fast mobile site. Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to run an automated news website?

Automation itself is fine. The legal risk comes from what you publish. Republishing someone else's article, even rewritten, can infringe copyright. Use sources that allow reuse, credit and link the original, add your own value, and respond to takedown requests. If you are unsure, consult a lawyer.

Will Google rank an automated news website?

Google does not rank or block sites just because they use automation. It looks at whether the content is helpful and people-first. No tool can promise rankings. Your best chance is original value, good sources and careful review.

How many posts should I publish per day?

There is no magic number. Start small, for example 5 to 10 posts a day, and grow only if you can keep quality high and review what goes live.

How much does AI AutoPost cost?

It uses pay-per-post credit packs, priced in INR. Credits never expire, and new accounts get free starter posts. See the pricing page for current packs, or the FAQ for more details.
